Endless Map | 3D Endless

Endless Map is a system which monitors the files most likely to be long term preserved. The first time the system is started or we connect a memory unit or a device, a dialog appears in which we can specify whether to map all its contents rather than a given personal folder, in order to obtain a map of the files contained, from which are implicitly excluded temporary, application and operating system files. Subsequently Endless Map keeps the map updated in the background at every system start and at the connection of any memory unit.

Endless Map displays the list of all the devices it has encountered at least once. By clicking on a folder, we have the display of its subfolders so that we can navigate from one level to another and view all the files from that level down.

The first thing that catches the eye is the color: all the folders that contain unique files, that is, not present on at least two memory devices, appear in red. Initially, all folders are colored red, but as they connect other storage drives, the folders begin to appear in black to indicate that all files contained, at any level below, are replicated identical in other drives.
For each folder, first of all, the date of the most recent file contained at any underlying level, the total occupation of the files, the number and name of the memory units on which there are total or partial replicas are shown.
For each folder we can configure the minimum number of memory units required, implicitly 2, under which the folder is considered at risk and displayed in red. If a folder is managed by cloud software such as Google Drive, OneDrive, DropBox, iCloud, etc., a ‘+’ is added to the number of memory units to indicate that, in addition to the physical drives available, it is also present in a remote location that can also be of great use for the immediate but unpredictable control in the medium or long term.

On the other hand, selecting the At Risk checkbox at the top of the screen restricts the current search result to files or folders where the minimum drive requirement is not met.

Geographic location

By setting an address or the name of a location, the system uses a geographic resolution service in order to retrieve all files that contain compatible latitude and longitude tags

For example, by setting the Trevi Fountain, the system returns, with a decent resolution, the list of images taken by modern smartphones and digital cameras in that geographical position.

Provenance, Notes, and Metadata

The Origin column is useful for entering free textual information on the origin of the files contained in the folder, for example the person, the source, the system, or a previous memory unit that is no longer available, etc.

The Notes / Meta column, on the other hand, allows you to enter free annotations on the contents of the folder or to use the

The file lists can be exported to text files and the entire map, including attributes, origin, notes and metadata exported to XML format files.

from the system automatically, if requested, such as the name and version of the software that generated the file, the date and time of the event, the author, the duration, geographical location, etc. All this information is available at Research. Selective metadata search, for example combined with other search criteria by time span, memory unit, source, etc., also allows you to locate obsolete formats and software so that you can export the list of related files to

examine a possible transfer process with a new format.

Refinement and Indices

Endless Map allows you to perform searches with subsequent refinements for example by memory unit, folders, time interval, origin, annotations and metadata, being able to go back to previous searches and refine with new criteria. Clicking on an Index (Memory Unit, File Extensions, Date, Source, Notes, Metadata) when the Narrow box is checked, you get the

frequency distribution of the index on the result of the last search.

Verification, Replication and Export

We can select folders or files to check if they are readable and the content is, despite the equality of the same name, date, time of last modification and size in bytes, perfectly identical as content (for example to detect any alterations by malicious software ). We can also manually replicate them on other locations or set rules for

automatic replication as soon as certain memory units are inserted.

If a periodic replication rule is specified that targets a network drive, for example:

the system checks the availability of the connection and, if so, automatically scans

the source drive and replicates on the network drive only the new or modified files, reconstructing, in the destination, the same tree structure underlying the starting folder.

Synchronization between multiple computers

It is possible to synchronize the map on multiple computers even with different operating systems, for example a computer with Windows and a computer with Mac OS in order to see the files present on all devices online, offline, switched on or turned off.

Versions

Endless Map is available in Community, Standard and Enterprise editions.
The Community version is free. It has almost the same functionality as the higher version without any limit on the number of memory units, folders and files to be explored and inserted into the map. The only restrictions are on the number of files that can be verified, replicated or exported in a single command.
If you want to overcome this constraint, you can buy the Standard version, at a cost of 3 euros, using the Get higher version button, present in the Options panel.

The Enterprise version allows you to upgrade a Community license on each company device.
